Steve Borthwick sweating over England captaincy

Steve Borthwick knows his hopes of keeping the England captaincy were dealt a few hefty blows in New Zealand.

And he now faces an anxious wait to find out if head coach Martin Johnson will keep him on in the post.

But Borthwick admits he could not have done much more to stop England's illfated tour turning sour.

The big lock, who will face competition to keep his place in the side as well as team leader, admitted: "This week has been one of the hardest of By GARY FITZGERALD my career. I've done the best job I can with the England captaincy. I was so proud to be given the chance of leading the side on this tour but obviously I had hoped it would go a little bit better.

"Results didn't go the way we hoped and the performances could have been better. But I think we have all learned something from this experience and we must make sure we improve for it. When things don't go to plan it's always disappointing."

Scrum-half Danny Care, who scored one of England's two tries, said: "I enjoyed the try but not the result. It's not nice looking at that scoreline.

"It's been a very tough tour. It's been harder than I expected."

England, however, found an unlikely ally in All Blacks coach Graham Henry, who offered them some crumbs of comfort.

Henry said: "I didn't think the English were poor. They played better than they did last week in patches. They had opportunities that didn't go their way."
