Rfu bosses have warned Martin Johnson they will not break the bank to lure him to Twickenham.
They are prepared to give him only the same salary presently being earned by coach Brian Ashton, which is in the region of £250,000 a year.
That is £100,000 short of the salary received by Director of Elite Rugby Rob Andrew.

However it would still make Jonno, if he takes up the job as team manager, one of the highest paid in the game.
An RFU source insisted: "We are not prepared to break our wage structure to accommodate Martin Johnson or anyone else for that matter.
"We are determined to do the right thing for English rugby and hopefully the situation will be resolved in the near future."
