Ian Miller's stoppage time first-leg winner sparked a crazed celebration by Darlington keeper David Stockdale.
But Stockdale calmed down to defy Rene Howe in the dying seconds with as uperb save that showed why Fulham boss Roy Hodgson has signed him.
The keeper - released by York because he was overweight - said: "It was a very emotional occasion for me to play my last home game and I went on a bit of a rampage after Ian's winner."
On-loan Jason Kennedy gave Darlo a deserved lead, Chris Dagnall levelling for Rochdale.
