Nani was sent off for head-butting Lucas Neill and will miss the climax to Manchester United's title campaign.
But video replays revealed that before being nutted, West Ham skipper Neill appeared to grab a handful of Nani - in the most personal manner.
It wasn't quite Vinnie Jones on Paul Gascoigne but United's Portuguese winger, 21, looked suitably surprised as he leapt to his feet to confront Neill.
As well as being suspended for United's final League game of the season at Wigan next weekend, Nani will be hit with a club fine.
Manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: "Nani showed his immaturity and we will deal with it.
"The referee was right to send him off - even if it was on the advice of one of his assistants."
