David Beckham has set his sights on playing at the 2010 World Cup finals.

Beckham will pick up his 99th cap if he plays against Croatia on Wednesday - but if Steve McClaren's side fail to reach the Euro 2008 finals many people believe it could wreck his hopes of becoming only the fifth player this century to clock-up 100 appearances for England.

But Beckham revealed his long-term ambition. He said: "I want to play in the next World Cup. That is a big goal for me and an enormous challenge.

"I believe I can do it. I wouldn't say it if I didn't mean it."

Some people have thought that the end of England's Euro 2008 campaign would mark the finale of Beckham's international careeer - especially with him now playing club football for LA Galaxy.

Beckham added: "Contrary to some people's claims, I didn't leave European football too early. I am still playing well and at a good standard. That's why I'm optimistic I can play in the 2010 World Cup.

"I won't retire. I will always make myself available for my country. That hasn't changed.

I would rather be stuck on 99 caps and England qualify, than win 100 caps and we don't make it."
