JENS Lehmann has sensationally revealed that he's ready to wear a protective helmet.

The Arsenal star insists goalkeepers do not receive enough protection in the wake of Petr Cech's fractured skull and the aerial collision that saw Chelsea's substitute keeper Carlo Cudicini knocked out and hospitalised at Reading last weekend.

Lehmann, who plays for Arsenal at the Madejski Stadium today, said: "I am thinking about wearing headgear to protect myself.

"It is inappropriate to make it obligatory for goalkeepers to wear headgear. However, if someone wants to wear one, I would understand that."

Asked how likely that it would be for him to don something like a boxer's head guard, Lehmann said: "It all depends on the referees now."

FIFA regulations allow players to wear protective equipment, such as head guards.

Law 4 states: "As long as protective equipment like headgear is made of soft, lightweight padded material it is not considered to be dangerous."
