Tony Mowbray saw his Premier League new boys suffer a second successive defeat.
Loan stopper Michal Danek was beaten inside 60 seconds by Nemanja Vucicevic and Milojove Novakovic doubled the German side's advantage. Roman Bednar's own goal and a Fabrice Ehret effort left Albion trailing 4-0 at the break.
Scottish international Craig Beattie scored Albion's consolation in the 76th minute.
The Baggies were beaten 2-1 by Borussia Monchengladbach on Wednesday.
