Joey Barton to undergo counselling sessions

New Castle's jailed midfielder Joey Barton will be moved into a rented club house on his release and will undergo a series of counselling sessions to help tackle his demons.

A club insider said: "It is well known Joey's problems stem from the fact he lives near his family and friends and is off the club's radar.

"When Joey is released he will be put into a rented home where they can keep a watchful eye on him and make sure he doesn't stray.

"Director of football Dennis Wise plans to sit him down and explain he is in the last-chance saloon.

"He will tell him he can either prove himself on the pitch at St James' or he will be put in with the juniors and made to rot in the reserves for the rest of his contract.

"The club will not give him away for nothing and need to be seen to help him dealing with his problems.

"Manager Kevin Keegan has great faith in Joey's ability and believes he will become a better player, but only if he stays out of trouble. Newcastle are willing to invest further time and money in Joey right to make sure that there are no repeats of these incidents and help him beat his demons."
