Rafa Benitez to offer Maik Taylor lifeline

Liverpool are set to offer Maik Taylor an unlikely Premier League lifeline if Birmingham City bite the dust this afternoon.

Northern Ireland keeper Taylor has emerged as a shock summer target for Reds boss Rafa Benitez as back-up to Pepe Reina.

Charles Itandje has failed to cut it in the top flight when called upon and Taylor, 36, has more than a decade of Premier League experience behind him.

The former Southampton and Fulham man will almost certainly stay with Alex McLeish's men if they manage to avoid the drop into the Championship today, but the lure of Anfield could prove difficult to resist if the Blues are relegated.
