ROBERT GREEN last night admitted West Ham would be "idiots" if they get relegated from the Premiership.

The keeper insists Alan Curbishley can lift them away from danger, after freely admitting they have let themselves down this season.

New boss Curbishley's reign started with a much-needed win over Manchester United and Green claims it is time the Hammers started producing on a regular basis.

England international Green said: "Hopefully we have given ourselves a little kick up the backside and shown what we can do. If we don't reproduce what we did against United then we are idiots.

"We did it against Arsenal and we have done it against Manchester United. We have to ask ourselves why we are not doing it against the smaller clubs.

"I think we went about it the right way against United and everybody gave everything. There is no reason why we can't get out of danger now.

"People were crawling off the pitch at the end of the game. It is easier when you are winning to run that extra yard, but we have to look at ourselves and reproduce that kind of performance week in, week out."

Defender Anton Ferdinand launched a passionate defence of skipper Nigel Reo-Coker, who was jeered by the home fans - even after scoring the precious winner against United.

Reo-Coker claims he has been singled out by fans, who blame him for the sacking of Alan Pardew last week,

Some supporters are convinced Reo-Coker's form has dropped away badly after having his head turned by early-season interest from Arsenal and Manchester United.

Fellow England Under-21 star Ferdinand said: "Nigel had been getting stick all week and for him to come out on top like that, not many people can do that. It shows how big a player he is and how much he has come along.

"He is my mate on and off the pitch and I am there for him 100 per cent. I have seen the s**t that he has taken and I think it is unfair.

"People forget how old he is. Football is not an age game, but he is only 22 and captain of a massive club. For people to put the sacking of the manager on his shoulders is very unfair. I thought he was magnificent.

"Nigel doesn't let the boos worry him. He is a professional and he showed it against Man United. He was the same as he always in the dressing room afterwards, calm and collected."

Curbishley has told Carlos Tevez to impress in training to win his place back in the Hammers' starting line-up after being dropped on Sunday.

"He took it well," said Curbishley. "He understood and I've said to him that the players who didn't play will be in training the next day to show me something, because I must see them perform.

"With the Christmas period they are going to have to show me in training, or when they get their chance, because there are no reserve games."
