Spin when you're winning

Spin king Monty Panesar produced his own miracle ball in the first npower Test to put the South Africans in a real daze.

The Sikh destroyer took a leaf out of Shane Warne's book as he turned the ball viciously square behind danger-man Neil McKenzie's legs and into his stumps (right).

Amazed McKenzie, who made 40, didn't know what had hit him. But the Proteas star was soon walking back through the Long Room as happy England fans roared their approval of Monty's brilliant delivery.

Former England great Geoff Boycott claimed: "It was a superb delivery. Almost Warne-like." And Panesar didn't stop there as Montymania gripped HQ again.

He was cheered all the way as he took an excellent 4-74 and bowled England towards victory.

Michael Vaughan's men reduced the visitors to 247 all out in reply to England's first innings 593-8dec - the last wicket falling to batting hero Kevin Pietersen.

The follow-on was enforced but in failing light England had to open with Panesar and Pietersen. By the close South Africa had stumbled to 13-0.
