Dear Dr Cath,
Until recently my husband, who is 57, and I enjoyed a good sex life. The problem is that when he gets an erection his penis bends which affects his ability to give deep penetration during sex. He has been advised that surgery could rectify the problem. Can you tell me more?
Dr Cath replies,
It sounds like your husband is suffering from Peyronie's disease. This occurs when a fibrous band of scar tissue forms on one side of the penis, usually the upper part. When the man gets an erection, this band doesn't expand like the rest of the penis, causing it to bend.
Nobody knows what causes Peryronie's but the result is painful sex and, in severe cases, inability to have sex at all. The object of treatment is to reduce the pain and to preserve sexual function. The outcome of surgery is usually good and your sex life should improve afterwards.
Talk over your concerns with the surgeon doing the operation.
