All alone with baby

Dear Dr Cath,

I have a four-monthold baby and can't stop arguing with my boyfriend. He is out all the time and I'm left at home alone. He says he has to work all the time to bring in enough money now we're a family. I feel like my life has disappeared and need help.

Dr Cath replies,

The first six months with a new baby puts a huge strain on a relationship.

Becoming a parent is an enormous responsibility. On top of that, you get little sleep and the financial pressure can crank up the stress levels. Little surprise you argue.

Adjusting to parenthood takes time and your boyfriend may be feeling pressure to do his bit by bringing in enough money. This may take up so much of his energy he has little left to help you.

Find baby groups in your area and meet other mothers who feel the same as you.

Most women get the baby blues, but 10 per cent may suffer from post-natal depression.

Talk to your doctor if you feel overwhelmed.
