THE horsey set are being urged to help Zara Phillips win the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year.

They are determined the Queen's granddaughter should beat Ryder Cup hero Darren Clarke to the award.

Horse & Hound magazine is asking readers to vote for Zara, 25, who is the reigning three-day event world champion.

She is second favourite behind Clarke who is 6/4 on to win. His brave showing in the Ryder Cup just weeks after the death of his wife, Heather, earned him huge support.

In a special editorial, H&H editor Lucy Higginson said: "Zara has had remarkable success in an otherwise unremarkable year for British sport.

"Bloggers have grudgingly identified her as the dark horse in this race

"Eventing may be 'posh' and Zara too, but she's also a great competitor, with guts, terrific sportsmanship and a champion's knack of saving her best for the big event."

For the first time, viewers can influence the shortlist for the BBC award as well as the final vote.
