Video exclusive: Boris Johnson breaking law as he cycles

EXCLUSIVE He cycles into work and jumps 6 red lights, mounts pavement & fails to stop at zebra crossing

He got elected as Mayor of London on promises of a safer transport system and a crackdown on "minor crime".

Yet here is Boris Johnson breaking the law as he cycles to work.

The blundering Tory zipped through SIX red lights, one pedestrian crossing and cycled on the pavement - on his 20-minute journey to and from work.

His dash began at 7.45am on Friday as Boris left his £2million home in Highbury, North London, on his bike, wearing dark suit trousers and shirt sleeves, with a rucksack.

Within minutes, he had run two red lights and at 8am near St Paul's Cathedral, he stopped to ask a taxi driver for directions, booming: "London Bridge?"

Then he set off again.

Crossing the Thames at London Bridge and approaching the London Assembly building, Boris mounted the pavement - totally oblivious to a nearby pedestrian - and cut through a park. He cycled on pavements illegally and a grass area before chaining his bike at a stand.

Wearing the same suit he had cycled to work in, Boris spent the day meeting New York mayor Michael Bloomberg to swap tips on how to police "minor crimes".

Then after work, he correctly walked his bike through the park at 7.30pm before cycling over London Bridge - and jumping two red lights near Monument Tube station.

He stopped in traffic at St Paul's and chatted with a cabbie again, pointing out one of the capital's dreaded bendy buses and repeating his vow to get rid of them.

At Angel, he dodged around a taxi with its hazard lights on - and steamed through a fifth red light.

Closer to home, Boris cycled over a zebra crossing, even though a man was stepping on to it. Then he crept over a crossing - jumping a sixth red light. He finally made it home at 8pm for tea.

Furious Andy Shrimpton, of the StopAtRed cyclists' campaign, said Boris showed blatant disregard for the Highway Code. He added: "I'd like to invite him to make up for his behaviour by signing our online pledge at www.stopatred.org.uk to obey red lights in the future and show how sorry he is."

The new mayor's trip to work echoed that of Tory leader David Cameron - caught out in March cycling through red lights, ignoring no entry signs and going the wrong way up a one-way street.

Boris's spokesman said last night: "Boris feels strongly that cyclists should not jump red lights and if he did so then clearly that was a mistake and he will be more careful in future."
