Cherie Blair was last night accused of ruthlessly "settling scores" and "cashing in" with the early publication of her memoirs.
Allies of Gordon Brown were furious at her claims that he tried to hound Tony Blair out of Downing Street before the 2005 election.
And they criticised Mrs Blair - who brought forward the release of Speaking for Myself from October after securing a £1.5million advance - for publishing her autobiography at a time when Labour is at rock-bottom in the opinion polls.
Mrs Blair claimed her husband was secretly still advising Mr Brown, and accused him of "rattling the keys" of Downing Street over Mr Blair's head to try to force him out.
One senior minister said: "Everyone is disappointed but not surprised Cherie has decided to cash in with this book. Her priority seems to be settling scores and rewriting history and to hell with the damage it might cause Labour."
