Shameless Jim lands sci-fi role

Shameless star James McAvoy will boldly go where no Scot has gone before - playing Scotty in Star Trek.

The 28-year-old actor has won the role of chief engineer of the Starship Enterprise, immortalised in Captain Kirk's phrase "Beam me up, Scotty".

He will star in the 11th movie in the sci-fi series - a prequel taking the crew back to Starfleet Academy.

Glaswegian James, acclaimed for his roles in the Channel 4 drama and hit film Last King of Scotland, will play Scotty as a young man. It's the first time the Scottish character has been played by a real Scot. The original Scotty, Canadian James Doohan, died aged 84 in 2005.

A movie insider said: "James was up against some famous names. Everyone's delighted to have him on board."

JAMES DOOHAN
