The boss in charge of the disastrous Heathrow Terminal 5 opening quit yesterday.

Mark Bullock had "chosen to leave" his job as Heathrow's managing director, said airport operator BAA.

Mr Bullock, who has been with the Spanish-owned firm since 2004, said: "The time is clearly right to move on and take on new challenges."

He will be replaced by Mike Brown, chief operating officer at London Underground.

The £4.3billion T5, built for British Airways flights, had a disastrous start on March 27 with days of flights cancelled, bags lost and huge queues.

The airline postponed moving long-haul flights to T5 until June.

Its operations director Gareth Kirkwood and customer services director David Noyes were sacked.

And BA chief executive Willie Walsh and BAA chief executive Colin Matthews were grilled by MPs on the Commons Transport Committee at a special hearing last week.
