While we're still on the subject of useless research - what about the new report that has taken almost a year to complete and reveals the blindingly obvious fact that people on fairground rides often throw their hands above their heads?

And that children are likely to wave to their parents as they whizz around on carousels.

And when I tell you it was the Health and Safety Executive who commissioned this ludicrous piece of data at a cost of £100,000 (which you and I pay for), the same organisation which last week told us that placing a towel on the bathroom floor helps prevent slipping (that cost £12,000), it tells you everything you need to know.

Is there no-one at the Department of Work and Pensions (which pays for the HSE) with even half a brain?
